How to Create a Cash Flow Google Sheets Template

You will find all of the useful tools in the main menu and toolbar section of Google Sheets. We will use a few of them in the following section to create the template from scratch.

Now, without any further ado, let’s begin.

STEP #1 – Creating the Header

A Header is an essential part of any Google Sheets template. A properly named header helps users understand the purpose of the template as soon as they open it.

Here are the steps,

  • Open a new Google Sheet by clicking here
  • Select the entire first row
  • Increase the height as per your preference
  • Change the cell background color to dark blue (Hex Code – #001149)
  • Change the font color to White
  • Click on the cell “A1
  • Type “Monthly Cash Flow” 
  • Increase the font size to 23
  • Make the font bold

Our header will look like below,

STEP #2 – Add the Tables for various Budgets

We can include several budget categories to track the cash flowing in and out. 

Here, we will include operations, investments, Finance, etc.

Let’s add the Operations section,

  • Select the cell “A4
  • Now, type “Operations
  • Make the font bold
  • Increase the font size to 16
  • Change the font color to dark blue (Hex Code – #001149)

Next, we need to create the vertical section of the first table.

Here are the steps:

  • Click on the cell “A7
  • Type “ +
    (Make sure to enter the space before and after the “+” symbol)
  • Now, select the cell “A8” and type “Cash Sales
  • Repeat the above steps and complete the table as shown below,

Since we have to create a Monthly Cash Flow template, we will have to add the months to fulfill the objective. For that,

  • Select the cell “C6
  • Enter “January
  • Next, click the cell “D6” and type “February
  • Repeat the above steps and complete the header as shown below,
  • For the column header, you need to enter the following details

The table header is ready. Let’s apply the formatting.

  • Select all the cells from “A6” to “O6
  • Change the cell background color to light gray (Hex Code – #f3f3f3)
  • Select the entire header range as shown in the previous image
  • Change the cell background color to light gray (Hex Code – #f3f3f3)
  • Repeat the above steps for the following range “C11:O13
  • Next, select the range as shown below,

Now, we need to ensure the monthly total and yearly total is automatically calculated using the SUM function.

To calculate the monthly total, we will use the following formula,

Monthly Operations Cost = Total Cash Generated – Total Expenses

Here are the steps,

  • Select the cell “D14
  • Type “=sum
  • Choose the first option from the popup or press “Tab” on your keyboard
  • Provide the cell range “C8:C13
  • Complete the bracket using “)
  • Type “
  • Next, enter “sum
  • Select the first option from the popup
  • Provide the cell range “C11:C13
  • Complete the parenthesis using “)
  • Press the “Enter” key

Our final formula will be as follows,

=SUM(C8:C9)-SUM(C11:C13)

Repeat the same formula for the rest of the months. Refer to the following image,

Similarly, to find the yearly total, here are the steps:

  • Select the cell “O8
  • Type “=sum
  • Choose the first option from the popup
  • Replace the “value” argument with the cell reference “C8:N8”
  • Complete the bracket using “)
  • Press the “Enter” key

Here’s how the final formula looks,

Repeat the above steps for the rest of the cells as shown below,

Next, use the following formula to find the sum of the yearly total.

Finally, let’s make sure that when we enter values in the table, they will automatically be converted to currency, and a dollar ($) symbol will appear at the beginning.

  • Select the table range as shown below
  • Go to the main menu
  • Click on the “Format” tab
  • Choose the “Number” option from the popup
  • Click the “Accounting” formatting option

That’s done. Our table to find the cash flow through operations is ready.

You need to repeat the above steps to create two more tables. Refer to the following image.

STEP #3 – Adding the Annual Summary Section

Adding an “Annual Ending” section is essential because it gives you an idea about the total cash increase/decrease and the closing balance at the year’s end.

To add this section, 

  • Select the cell “A4
  • Now, type “Operations
  • Make the font bold
  • Increase the font size to 16
  • Change the font color to dark blue (Hex Code – #001149)
  • Next, complete the horizontal header as shown below
  • Similarly, complete the vertical header as shown below,

Once the table is ready, we need to format it. Let us use the same color code we used for the tables in the previous section.

Note that you also need to change the number formatting to “Accounting” so that the values entered will be represented as the currency. You can refer to the previous section for the steps.

Finally, to find the decrease or increase in the cash flow for the given month, we will use the following formula.

Cash Flow Increase/Decrease = (Operations Total + Investment Total) – Finances Total

For January, cell “C14” includes Operations Total, “C22” includes Investment Total, and “C30” includes Finances Total.

So, our formula for the January month will be,

Cash Flow Increase/Decrease = (C14+C22)-C30

Insert the formula in the Annual Ending table in the cell “C38”.

=(C14+C22)-C30

To apply this formula for the rest of the months, here are the steps:

  • Click on the cell “C38
  • Hover over the Fill Handle icon as shown below
  • Click on it and drag the formula to the end of the table

STEP #4 – Formatting the Template

This is the final step; here, we will format the template using built-in options.
