However, if you are not satisfied with this quick help, below is a detailed guide on how to insert this and any other symbol into Google Sheets.

By the way, Delta is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. The uppercase symbol for Delta is Δ and the lowercase symbol is δ. The uppercase delta symbol (Δ) carries various interpretations across different contexts. In mathematics, it represents change or difference between values. In physics, it denotes a variation in quantity. In finance, it signifies the change in a variable, such as stock prices or interest rates. Understanding these diverse meanings underscores the importance of correctly inserting the delta symbol in your Google Sheets.

There are some symbols readily available as second keys on the keyboard. By pressing some keys simultaneously, you can easily insert such symbols into your work.

Other symbols, however, aren’t that easy to type using the keyboard. One of these symbols is the Delta symbol (Δ).

Typing becomes cumbersome if you need to insert some of these symbols regularly into his work.

But it doesn’t have to be that difficult. Especially now that you are reading this guide.

Insert Delta symbol in Google Sheets

Unlike other symbols, the Delta symbol requires more effort to input. Don’t let the complexity deter you—this guide will unravel the process, enabling you to effortlessly include the Delta symbol in your spreadsheets.

In this blog, I have shown you all the easy ways to insert the Delta symbol (Δ) into Google Sheets.

NOTE: I demonstrate using the uppercase Delta symbol (Δ). However, the same method can be used to insert any other symbol including the lowercase Delta symbol (δ).

Below are the various ways to insert Delta symbol into Google Sheets.

Delta symbol Alt code (Windows Only)

Every symbol in Google Sheets has a unique code which you can use to insert the symbol into your document. This code is popularly known as Alt code.

The Delta Symbol Alt code is 235 for lowercase delta and 30 for uppercase delta. To type this symbol using the alt code, hold down the Alt key whilst you type the alt code using the numeric keypad, then release the Alt key.

That’s it for the Alt Code method which works for Windows only.

Copy and paste the Delta symbol

Inserting symbols into your document can be as simple as copy and paste.

You can copy and paste it again if you have already inserted it into your document. Or you can copy it from elsewhere like a webpage.

This works everywhere on both Windows and Mac.

Below is the Delta symbol if you want to copy and paste it into your work:

To copy and paste the delta sign, click on the button above. Alternatively, select the symbol here (Δ), press Ctrl+C to copy. Then switch over to where you need it and press Ctrl+V to paste.

Using Unicode & the CHAR() Function to Insert Delta Symbol in Google Sheets

Think of Unicode as a big library where every character has a special code. This code helps computers understand characters from different languages and styles.

And imagine the CHAR function as a special tool. It takes those codes from Unicode and turns them into actual symbols or letters on your screen. It’s like making code come to life!

Now, picture these two things coming together to make the Delta symbol. It’s like merging old secrets with new tricks. By using the special code (916) for the Delta symbol and the CHAR tool, you can make a formula that brings the Delta symbol (Δ) into a cell.

Curious? Let’s unravel this magic step by step.

  • click on the cell where you want to insert the symbol.
  • In the formula bar, type “=CHAR(916)” and press Enter.

Using Custom Formats to Display Delta Symbols in Google Sheets (Useful for Dashboards)

If you’re aiming to showcase the delta symbol (Δ) before or after a number in a cell while keeping the original content intact, you can achieve this by specifying a custom format.

This technique is particularly valuable when you’re creating dashboards or reports and want to add visual context without altering the underlying data.

The key distinction of this method lies in its approach. Unlike other methods that involve changing the actual content of cells, this technique focuses solely on modifying how the content is displayed. The cell’s value remains unaltered; the only change occurs in its visual representation. For instance, if a cell contains the number 17 and you implement this method to show Δ 17, the cell value remains 17.

To implement this method effectively, follow these steps:

  • Select the Target Cells

Begin by choosing the cells where you want to display the delta symbol alongside the numbers.

  • Go to Format > Number > Custom Number Format
  • Define the Custom Format

In the text field, input the desired custom formatting. To display the delta symbol before numbers, use the following format:

Δ General; Δ -General;

  • Click Apply to Confirm

After inputting the custom format, click the “Apply” button to save the changes.

As you implement these steps, you’ll witness an instantaneous transformation in the way your selected cells are displayed. The delta symbol will gracefully accompany the numbers, adding a layer of visual communication without altering the original data.

Using Google Docs to Insert Delta symbol into Google Sheets

Surprisingly, Google Sheets doesn’t offer a direct navigational way to insert the delta symbol. But Google Docs has.

So the workaround is that you can insert the symbol into Google Docs using the navigation method, then copy and paste it into your Google Sheets document.

Let’s get it started with.

  • Open Google Docs
  • Go to the “Insert” menu in Google Docs. From the dropdown menu, select “Special characters.”
  • Search for Delta, the click on it in the search results to insert it into your Google Docs.
  • Copy the Delta Symbol, open your Google Sheets, and paste it there.

While Google Sheets may lack a direct navigational way to insert the delta symbol, this workaround using Google Docs is a handy solution. It’s a long method though and you are better off using the shortcuts or the other methods explained before.

Troubleshooting and Common Issues Whilst trying to insert Delta symbol in Google Sheets

In case the delta symbol isn’t displaying correctly, consider these solutions:

  • Font Compatibility: Ensure you’re using a font that supports the delta symbol (Δ).
  • Character Sets: Check that your spreadsheet’s character set supports special characters.
  • Internet Connection: If using Google’s online version, a stable internet connection is crucial for accessing special characters.

Alternatives to the Delta Symbol

While the delta symbol is powerful, exploring alternative methods of representing changes can enrich your data visualization:

  • Arrow Symbols: Upward or downward arrows can represent positive and negative changes.
  • Change Percentage: Displaying percentage changes alongside numeric values can provide additional context.
  • Color Coding: Using color gradients or conditional formatting to visually indicate changes.
