Paragraph Marks are hidden symbols that get inserted at the end of every paragraph when you hit the Enter key. The Paragraph symbol is also known as the Pilcrow or Alinea.
In this guide, you’ll learn how to easily remove the Paragraph symbol in Word in less than no time.
Without any further ado, let’s get started.
NOTE: If you are looking for a post on how to type or insert the paragraph symbol on your keyboard, please refere to this one.
How to Get rid of the Paragraph Mark in Word
As some do, you can choose to display the paragraph symbol in your Word document as it helps to diagnose formatting issues in a document. However, most users prefer to hide those marks because they can make the document harder to read for editing. Many users, probably like yourself, find the paragraph marks annoying and distracting.
When you see the paragraph Symbol Marks in your document, it means that the setting to show/hide these marks is enabled withing the document.
Thus, if you receive and launch a document created by another user, it might have these unwanted characters displayed all over in the document.
If you want to get rid of these paragraph symbols within your document, simply press Ctrl+Shift+8 shortcut on your keyboard to remove these marks from your document. You can bring them back by pressing these same hotkeys.
Alternatively, you can also turn off the paragraph symbol by obeying the steps below:
- Launch your document that has the Paragraph Marks enabled.
- Go to the Home tab.
- In the Paragraph group, click on the Paragraph symbol to disable it.
- Click again to enable and bring back the paragraph symbol into your document.
These are the ways you may use to show and remove paragraph symbols in Microsoft Word.
Advanced settings to Remove the Paragraph Marks from Word
At times, these marks may not go away after following the steps shown above. If this is happening to you, don’t worry. You just need to consider the settings a bit more carefully. Let me show you the way:
- Click on the File tab.
- Go to Options > Display
- Uncheck the Paragraph marks checkbox.
If the paragraph mark is checked here, it means that it can’t be removed using the Ctrl+Shift+8 shortcut, nor the Show/Hide button.
Thus, if you are trying so hard to turn off this mark, you need to first of all make sure that it is disabled here.
Conclusion
These are the various ways you may turn off or remove the paragraph symbol from your Word document.
