  • Turn on your Num Lock. Use Fn key plus NumLk to turn on Num Lock on laptops without numeric keypad.
  • Whilst holding down the [Alt] key, type [0176] on the numeric keypad (on the right). The alt code for the degree symbol is 0176.
  • Then release the [Alt] key. The degree (°) symbol should appear in your document.

Using Word AutoCorrect to type a degree sign

Another way to obtain the degree symbol is through AutoCorrect. Very interesting trick.

The AutoCorrect is a facility designed for correcting spelling mistakes like hte to the.

Using this technique, you can assign a code to the degree symbol (such as DEGS).

This way, whenever you type the text DEGS, Word will remember and convert it into a degree symbol automatically.

What makes this approach interesting is that you can assign any code you want to the symbol and Word will be more than glad to give you a degree symbol whenever you type the code.

Without further ado, here are the steps to use AutoCorrect to insert degree symbol in Word.

  • On the Insert tab, click on the Symbol button and choose More Symbols…
  • Click to select the degree symbol.
  • Click on the AutoCorrect… button to display the AutoCorrect dialog.

  • In the Replace: box, type DEGS – the AutoCorrect text you want to assign to the degree symbol.
  • In the With: box, make sure it contains the degree symbol. If it doesn’t, you can press Alt+0176 (using the numeric keypad) to insert it or copy and paste from the document or a webpage.

Word will automatically insert the degree symbol as soon as you type DEGS anywhere in your document.

Below are some few things to note though when using the Autocorrect approach.

  • AutoCorrect is case sensitive. Meaning if you type degs, Word will not convert it into the degree symbol unless you type DEGS (in uppercase).
  • If there is any text before DEGS, Word will consider the code as part of the text and hence will not convert it to the degree symbol. For example, CDEGS will not get converted, but C DEGS will get converted to C °.
